The annual Top Technician competition was created back in 2003 to recognise and reward the best vehicle technicians in the United Kingdom.

Top Technician has become a highly respected competition among technicians, the automotive media and increasingly, the general public. Trouble shooting on modern passenger cars is a highly skilled and technical job. The tens of thousands of professional technicians who keep millions of motorists safe on the road should be proud of the job they do.

Why enter?
If you would like to:
  • Meet other experienced technicians from across the UK
  • Get recognition for your skills and knowledge
  • Gain publicity for yourself and your business
  • See how far you can get in the competition
  • Have the chance of winning a prize package worth thousands of pounds!

All you need to do is fill in the short entry form by clicking here; you will be emailed details about the initial online test, which will be available from Sept 25th 2009 onwards.

"I’ve had so much publicity from being in Top Technician. Wherever I go, everyone knows I was in the competition.
The local workshops all know me and knew I entered so they went online at www.aftermarketnetwork.com to see how I got on."
Finalist David Hirst on the business benefits of Top Technician.

"I’d really like to win it. Maybe it’s a bit big-headed but you just feel you need a little bit extra and you might get it. I want to keep on trying."
Making the finals on four occasions is clearly not enough for a competitive guy like Jerry Carroll.

The one to win!
Richard Perriman, a technician at Martin Pilley Services in Hampshire scooped the Top Technician 2009 title and £10,500 worth of prizes after winning through three rounds of technical tests. All the tests were formulated in line with Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) standards and set by Ian Gillgrass, accreditation manager at the Institute of the Motor Industry.

Fellow finalists Stuart White, from Complete Car Maintenance in Surrey, and John Tinham, from John Tinham Motor Engineer in Chelmsford, were announced as runners-up. Richard, Stuart and John beat technicians from throughout the UK in a series of online, practical and written tests assessing every aspect of their technical and repair skills.

Speaking to Aftermarket moments after taking the title, a visibly surprised and elated Richard said: “I’m gobsmacked. I can’t believe it. I’m so happy now it’s just starting to sink in.”

Thanks to the generosity of Top Technician’s 2009 sponsors Bosch, Comma, Euro Car Parts, NGK, SACHS and Snap-on, Richard took home a huge prize haul worth more than £10,500. His prize jackpot includes:

  • £1,000 worth of Bosch vouchers for diagnostic kit plus technical DVDs
  • A Palmer Sport driving day at Bedford Autodrome from Comma
  • A top-of-the-range Vedis diagnostic tool from Euro Car Parts
  • 50,000 BoxClever promotional points from NGK
  • £1,000 worth of holiday vouchers from SACHS
  • A SOLUS-Pro scan tool from Snap-on and . . .
  • £2,500 cash tax-free from the competition’s organisers Aftermarket

Stuart and John also received generous prize packages from the competition’s sponsors.

Since his win, Richard says, “I have lost count of the number of congratulations I have had from customers. They have been saying, "Are you going to work on my car?", and, "It’s nice to know such a knowledgeable person is here to look after my car". Many other garages are aware of my success and have been in contact with congratulations and advice.”
