Fellow finalists Stuart White, from Complete Car Maintenance in Surrey, and John Tinham, from John Tinham Motor Engineer in Chelmsford, were announced as runners-up. Richard, Stuart and John beat technicians from throughout the UK in a series of online, practical and written tests assessing every aspect of their technical and repair skills.
Speaking to Aftermarket moments after taking the title, a visibly surprised and elated Richard said: I'm gobsmacked. I can't believe it. I'm so happy now it's just starting to sink in.
Thanks to the generosity of Top Technician's 2009 sponsors Bosch, Comma, Euro Car Parts, NGK, SACHS and Snap-on, Richard took home a huge prize haul worth more than £10,500. His prize jackpot includes:
- £1,000 worth of Bosch vouchers for diagnostic kit plus technical DVDs
- A Palmer Sport driving day at Bedford Autodrome from Comma
- A top-of-the-range Vedis diagnostics tool from Euro Car Parts
- 50,000 BoxClever promotional points from NGK
- £1,000 worth of holiday vouchers from SACHS
- A SOLUS-Pro scan tool from Snap-on and . . .
- £2,500 cash tax-free from the competition's organisers Aftermarket
Stuart and John also received generous prize packages from the competition's sponsors.
Since his win, Richard says, I have lost count of the number of congratulations I have had from customers. They have been saying, "Are you going to work on my car?", and, "It's nice to know such a knowledgeable person is here to look after my car". Many other garages are aware of my success and have been in contact with congratulations and advice.
